Stoupa is a charming seaside village in Messinian Mani, located 45 km from Kalamata and 55 km from the airport, that captivates visitors year-round, drawing them back to Stoupa again and again.
In the summer period, the sea and the pristine sandy beaches call to every water lover. Stoupa boasts two main beaches: Stoupa Beach and the renowned Kalogria Beach.
It was at Kalogria beach that Nikos Kazantzakis and Alexis Zorbas lived for two years (1917-1918). The Cretan writer was thus inspired to write later his world-famous novel “Zorba the Greek”. Today, half of the foreigners visiting the area hold a copy of Zorbas in their hands, while the other half, of course, hold the book “Mani” written by Patrick Leigh Fermor, who also lived in the region.
Beyond Kalogria and Stoupa, the area is dotted with beautiful beaches that cater to all preferences, combining sand and pebbles, always with crystal-clear waters. Among the most popular are: Ritsa, Kalamitsi, Foneas, Kalogria, Stoupa, Delfinia, Pantazi, and others.
Every visitor is pleasantly surprised and impressed by the dynamic change of scenery: steep cliffs, caves, and gorges on the one hand, olive trees, beaches, small harbors and islands on the other. However, the region’s character is further defined by landmarks such as the Castle of Stoupa, the Kazantzakis mines in Prastova, the tower houses of old Kardamyli, the small port of Agios Nikolaos, the cobbled streets, the bridges, and the Byzantine churches found in all quiet corners.
